Berkeley Playhouse continues its fifth season with the Tony Award-winning GUYS AND DOLLS. Jon Tracy (Berkeley Playhouse, Aurora Theatre Company, Shotgun Players, San Francisco Playhouse, Magic Theatre) helms this musical from the Golden Age of Broadway, featuring a cast of 22, and choreography by Chris Black (Berkeley Playhouse, Aurora Theatre Company). GUYS AND DOLLS plays March 21 through April 28 (Press opening: March 23) at the Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley. This show was wonderfully executed and hit the ground tapping. This featured some fierce talents in tap and I sat there amazed at several of the numbers.

'Ring in the new year with a jazz concert or three' at The David and Carol Lackland Center in Hackettstown says General Manager Catherine Rust. Centenary Stage Company will be presenting its annual JANUARY JAZZ FEST in the Sitnik Theatre on Saturday, January 12th, 19th, and 26th. This year's festival includes a tribute to Benny Goodman, a celebration of legendary female vocalists like Anita O'Day and Julie London, and a revival of gypsy jazz by The Hot Club of Detroit.

The Jewish Museum and the Film Society of Lincoln Center will present the 22nd annual New York Jewish Film Festival at the Film Society's Walter Reade Theater, Jan. 9-24, 2013. The festival's 45 features and shorts from 9 countries - 23 screening in their world, U.S. or New York premieres - provide a diverse global perspective on the Jewish experience. Many film screenings will be followed by filmmakers and special guests in onstage discussions.

In 1966 the Hallmark Hall of Fame presented a television adaptation of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's Off Broadway musical THE FANTASTICKS. Ricardo Montalban appeared as El Gallo and Bert Lahr and Stanley Holloway were the two fathers. The young lovers were played by Broadway's favorite ingenue, Susan Watson, and a clean-cut young man named John Davidson who had made a strong impression on Broadway audiences as Lahr's son in the musical FOXY.

A play is only as strong as its weakest link and when that link is the structure of the play then the rest will suffer immensely. Unfortunately Theater Schmeater's current show, "Lark Eden" suffers from that link and a few others. And while it has its moments, ultimately it's weighed down by some forced and cliche plot points and a structure that keeps betraying itself.
