Smuin Ballet presents the riveting Oh, Inverted World by acclaimed choreographer Trey McIntyre set to music by the popular indie-rock band The Shins in Walnut Creek (Feb 4-5), Carmel (Feb 18-19), and Mountain View (Feb 23-27).. This dynamic ballet the New York Times called 'striking' and 'remarkable' made its world premiere in San Francisco last October. The program will also include Bluegrass/ Slyde by Michael Smuin, an electric piece called 'riotous' by the SF Examiner and featuring the bluegrass twang of renowned banjoist Béla Fleck and master bassist Edgar Meyer. Rounding out the program is Smuin's classic ballet Brahms-Haydn Variations, a lyrical favorite filled with courtly references, called 'lovely' by the San Francisco Chronicle and 'impressive' by the New York Times. Single tickets ($49-$62) are available through their prospective theatres or by visiting www.smuinballet.org.

Neil Nathan, a former high school history teacher, may no longer work at New York's Martin Luther King, Jr. High, but he's still always looking for opportunities to inspire and educate. The upcoming Election Day is just one of those opportunities. 'So Much More' was written for 'the angels of American democracy' and is all about the power of individual citizens to bring about positive political change. The video is filled with inspiring images that make any viewer want to rock the vote. 'So Much More' can be found on his debut LP, The Distance Calls.
Just in time for Halloween and The Day of the Dead, Neil Nathan debuts the video for 'Darling Friend,' his lap steel infused re-interpretation of Ludwig Von Beethoven's 'Fur Elise.' In it, Nathan, bedecked in a Beethoven meets T Rex composer jacket serenades the coffin of his lost love while surrounded by a twirling, ghoulish dance troupe. 'Darling Friend' is directed by Vaj Potenza (My Brightest Diamond's 'Freak Out Gold Chains Remix') and choreographed by Suzanne Rydz. Vaj also co- directed two of Nathan's latest videos, 'California Run' and 'When The Rain Falls.' The song is the second single off Neil's covers EP, Songsmiths, which was produced by long time steel collaborator Mike 'Slo-Mo' Brenner (Slo-Mo, Marah, Jason Molina).
A combination of great things is about to happen. Recent events in the American political arena have certainly illustrated that, even to this day, there is--and perhaps, always will be--a conflict between the strict doctrine of most factions of organized religion and the equal-rights-seeking gay community. This heated, often deeply painful struggle is even more pronounced for those caught in the middle of these two opposing worlds. This internal conflict it causes--to stay truthful to one's sexual identity, as well as abide by the long-ingrained teachings of their church's gospel--is the subject of Del Shores' stirring SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES, presented by Theatre Out, Orange County's sole gay and lesbian theatre company, at Santa Ana's Empire Theatre through September 2.
Playwright John Patrick Shanley explores the 'feminization' of the male of the species with his work PSYCHOPATHIA SEXUALIS (google Krafft-Ebbing for a more detailed explanation of the historical and ground-breaking, but essentially flawed, text that the title is copped from, but bears no resemblance toward), focusing on a pair of men who wouldn't seem out of place in some Larry David scenario, acting much like the fully grown, but emotionally immature males who dominate his output.
