As BroadwayWorld sadly reported yesterday, award-winning Broadway actor John McMartin has passed away at the age of 86. McMartin most recently appeared on Broadway in 2014's ALL THE WAY and the 2011 revival of ANYTHING GOES.

Lipuma, announces a one-week extension to Company, featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. The production is directed by William Brown. Today in 2005, the second Broadway revival of Sweet Charity opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where it ran for 279 performances. Sweet Charity is a musical with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon. It was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse starring his wife and muse Gwen Verdon alongside John McMartin. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, and also ran in the West End as well as having revivals and international productions. THe 2005 revival starred Christina Applegate in he title role.

This past January, Broadway performer Benjamin Eakeley charmed audiences at Feinstein's/54 Below with Broadway Swinger. In anticipation of the encore performance, BroadwayWorld chatted with Eakeley about his solo cabaret show; SHE LOVES ME, his current Broadway gig; and his 1960s musical heavy career.

BroadwayWorld previously reported that The Nederlander organization was looking to add a basement to the Palace Theatre, and we have now learned that a renovation plan has officially been approved.

Looks like the Palace will be getting more than a facelift! After yesterday's hearing, the New York City Landmarks Commission has officially approved plans (subject to peer review) to restore the interior and literally lift the Palace Theatre building 29 feet above the ground to make room for four stories of retail space.
