Krister Henriksson, who is best known as Wallander in Henning Mankell's widely praised Swedish TV series, makes his West End debut in Doktor Glas starting previews from 16 April at the Wyndham's Theatre. Originally performed at the National Theatre of Sweden, Doktor Glas is adapted from the classic novel by Hjalmar Soderberg and performed in its original Swedish with English surtitles. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presents the U.S. premiere of Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander by the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, Sweden. An acclaimed stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's four-time Academy Award winning film, inspired in part by the influential Swedish filmmaker's own upbringing, Fanny and Alexander is directed by Stefan Larsson and runs March 7-9 in the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater as part of Nordic Cool 2013. Press opening night is March 7 at 7:30 p.m.The production is performed in Swedish with English supertitles.
August Strindberg Repertory Theatre (www.strindberg.org), which was formed last year to illuminate Strindberg's plays for today's American audiences, will present Strindberg's 'Easter' (Pask, 1901) with an all-black cast, adapted and directed by Robert Greer, from March 8 to 31 at the Gene Frankel Theatre, 24 Bond Street (East Village). The play has a similar complement of characters to Strindberg's 'Playing With Fire' (Leka med elden, 1893), with which the young company made an auspicious debut last Spring. Cast members from 'Playing With Fire' will be returning to play their corresponding roles in 'Easter.'
