Based on Anna Christie, Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, New Girl in Town is a passionate, joyous musical by Broadway master George Abbott and then-newcomer Bob Merrill. The 1921 classic is brought to colorful turn-of-the--century New York in this solid star vehicle that blends the moving tenderness of the original play with appealing melodies and infectious dances.
An old Swedish sailor is overjoyed when his daughter, Anna, visits him after fifteen years of living in St. Paul. His crony, Marthy, realizes that she is not the sweet innocent whom her father imagines, though, but rather a former streetwalker who's come back to reassemble the pieces of her shattered life. Anna gradually fits in with her father's friends, even falling in love for the first time... until an envious Marthy spills the truth about Anna's past at a neighborhood ball, nearly destroying her dream of happiness.

It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment when Florence Henderson became a household name. It was certainly through the media of television, but was it her numerous appearances on the then-popular variety shows? Perhaps it was because of the proliferation of commercials she did for Polident and Wesson Oil; the latter in which she helped coin the phrase 'Wessonality'. Obviously her long stint as Mrs. Carol Brady in 'The Brady Bunch' played a major role in her becoming not only a name people easily recognized, but a talent that has genuinely been appreciated by different generations down through the years.

'Exciting' is not a word normally associated with productions of Thornton Wilder's Our Town. Heartwarming? Sure. Chilling? When its climax is done well, certainly. But director David Cromer's non-traditional take on the play - which remains completely faithful to the author's text and themes - is one of the most exciting theatre events of the season.
