Cracks - 1976 Off-Broadway Page 3

LA STRADA, Birmingham Rep
by Emma Cann - May 8, 2017

Fellini's La Strada is an exploration of post-war Italy; a time before industrial boom made Italy a desirable, fashionable destination, when rural swathes of the country were still run on a 'peasant economy'. The desperate situation of many rural families is reflected Gelsomina's mother's willingness to sell her oldest surviving daughter to travelling strongman Zampano.  (more...)

BWW Interview: Getting 'Fantastic Results' with Great Orchestras Makes Conductor Manfred Honeck Happy
by Richard Sasanow - May 22, 2017

Nobody puts conductor Manfred Honeck in a corner--except, perhaps the maestro himself. For instance, the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony and frequent guest conductor in the US and Europe makes no bones about viewing himself as the quintessential mittel-european maestro, devoted to Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Richard Strauss and others of that ilk. But he's also an advocate of the music of the 21st century and works by Shankar, Stucky, Danielpour, Adamsand other newer masters. (more...)

BWW Review: THE SHADOW BOX at Little Theatre Of Mechanicsburg
by Allison Rambler - May 2, 2017

The world of theatre encompasses every issue under the sun; from war to small town drama, from orphans to puppets, theatre has seen it all. Using this logic, it makes sense that many plays and musicals often deal with the challenging topic of illness and death. Musicals such as NEXT TO NORMAL and HEATHERS take very different approaches to the subject of our own mortality, and there are a myriad of plays that attempt to tackle the issue. Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg has chosen one such play, a drama entitled THE SHADOW BOX, and through this show continues to prove that they deserve a bigger spotlight than the small, tucked away world of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania can provide for them. BWW Review: The Theatre High of hearing John Bucchino play IT'S ONLY LIFE
by Ellen Dostal - Jun 13, 2017

I'm sorry if you missed Art-In-Relation's production of IT'S ONLY LIFE this past weekend because you missed hearing a remarkable musician play his own magnificent songs in a tiny 50-seat theater. To have that luxury is a rare occurrence, even for a city like Los Angeles. It was a breathtaking evening with the composer at the piano expressing, as only one who has written a song truly can, the most intimate nuances of a piece. For a lover of music, it was transcendent. BWW Review: New Century's THE REALISTIC JONESES is Clever but Unsatisfying
by Jay Irwin - Jun 12, 2017

Give me a good old fashioned play with a good old fashioned structure; a beginning, a middle and an end. Or if not, if you insist on a slice of life play, at least have something interesting to say about said life. Instead, what Will Eno's play, "The Realistic Jones", the current offering from New Century Theatre Company, gives us is an hour and 40 minutes of somewhat clever dialog from some stuck, sad people that I wouldn't want to spend 5 minutes with let alone an entire play. (more...)
