Mellon Foundation Awards Playwriting Grant to South Coast Repertory

Pacific Symphony Dives Into New Year with Mozart's REQUIEM, Now thru 2/3

Featuring four world-class vocalists, soprano-Sharla Nafziger, mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer, tenor Brian Stucki, bass-baritone Derrick Parker-and the angelic voices of the Pacific Chorale, the program also includes Mozart's Masonic Funeral Music, Fantasia in F Minor for solo organ, featuring organist Jung-A Lee, Ave verum corpus, plus, excerpts from and the Overture to 'The Magic Flute.' Taking place Today through Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 3, at 8 p.m., in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the concert includes a preview talk at 7 p.m. and a post-concert talkback with Symphony advisor Joseph Horowitz and Maestro St.Clair.

Happy Birthday Laura Osnes! Osnes made her Broadway debut in the 2007 revival of Grease. On March 10, 2009 Osnes took over the role of Ensign Nellie Forbush from Tony Award nominee Kelli O'Hara, who went on maternity leave, in the Lincoln Center Theater Broadway revival of South Pacific. She then starred as Hope Harcourt, alongside Sutton Foster and Joel Grey, in the Broadway revival of Anything Goes. Osnes then played Bonnie Parker opposite Jeremy Jordan in Bonnie & Clyde, which opened at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in 2011. She will soon lead the upcoming revival of Cinderella.

It is sure to be a bittersweet moment when Maxim Eshkenazy-Pacific Symphony's much-loved assistant conductor for the last four seasons-steps down at the end of 2012-13, passing the baton to new Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutierrez. But luckily, it's going to be a long goodbye for the very popular Eshkenazy, who continues with the Symphony, sharing duties with Gutierrez throughout the coming season.

Born and raised in Brazil, Paulo Szot made his opera debut 1997 and has appeared with many major opera companies throughout the world before starring in the Broadway revival of South Pacific at Lincoln Center Theatre, earning him the Tony Award, the Drama Desk, the Outer Critic's Circle and the Theater World Awards for his portrayal of Emile De Beque. In the 2008-2009 season Mr. Szot made his New York Philharmonic debut in a concert conducted by Marvin Hamlisch appearing alongside Liza Minnelli. After making his highly acclaimed Metropolitan Opera debut, he also made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops Orchestra. Mr. Szot has performed in the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center as part of the American Songbook Series and, in 2010 and 2011, at the Cafe Carlyle in New York.

The Old Globe will open its 2012-13 Winter Season with the World Premiere of Allegiance - A New American Musical. Created by Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione with music and lyrics by Kuo, the original musical tells the story of a Japanese American family forced into an internment camp during World War II. Directed by Stafford Arima (Carrie, Altar Boyz, West End premiere of Ragtime), the production features musical direction and arrangements by Lynne Shankel (Cry-Baby, Company) and choreography by Christopher Gattelli (Newsies, Godspell, South Pacific). Tony Award-winning actress Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables), television and film icon George Takei ("Star Trek," "Heroes") and Telly Leung (Godspell, Rent) will star.

On the Square Productions, an award winning not for profit theatre company, announces their season on August 29th, 2011. On the Square has worked with has worked with such talents as Cyrilla Baer (The Adding Machine, Uncle Vanya at CSC), Lauren Molina (Sweeney Todd, Rockof Ages, Candide-Helen Hayes Award, Ten Cents a Dance-Williamstown), Wesley Taylor (Rock of Ages, The Addams Family, Tales From the City- ACT), Marnie Schulenburg (As The World Turns, South Pacific- Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival). Highlights for the upcoming season include readings by playwrights Delaney Britt Brewer (Youngblood Playwrights) and Jacqueline Goldfinger (current semi-finalist F.Otto Haas award for Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist, nominee 2010 L. Arnold Weissberger Award). Other highlights include The Festival of Dionysia:Ten Minute Play Festival, and a site specific production of The Minervae by Steven Bost for the Queens community.
