STAGE TUBE: On This Day 5/26- Al Jolson
by Nicole Rosky - May 26, 2014

Happy Birthday Al Jolson! Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. Although he's best remembered today as the star in the first (full length) talking movie, The Jazz Singer in 1927, he later starred in a series of successful musical films throughout the 1930s. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with the 1946 Oscar-winning biographical film, The Jolson Story. His Broadway credits include: Hold on to Your Hats, The Wonder Bar, Big Boy, Artists and Models, Bombo, and many more.

Harriet Harris, Bill Irwin, Kirsten Wyatt & John Bolton to Star in San Francisco Opera's SHOW BOAT; Performances Begin 6/1
by Tyler Peterson - May 15, 2014

Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's Show Boat opens San Francisco Opera's Summer Season on June 1 with nine subsequent performances through July 2, 2014. A watershed of American musical theater, Show Boat receives its Company premiere in director Francesca Zambello's new grand-scale "beautifully sung, smartly staged and handsomely designed (Chicago Tribune)" production. A beloved story of life on the Mississippi in the 1880s, Show Boat is both a poignant love story and a powerful reminder of America's bitter legacy of racism. The score is filled with unforgettable songs such as "Ol' Man River" and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," and the dazzling production features large, colorful sets, sumptuous costumes and exhilarating dance numbers. Of recent performances at Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Chronicle wrote "[This is] a towering work. . . there's a magnificence in its music, its narrative sweep, its deep awareness of something bigger than ourselves."

Metha Parisien Bercier Celebrates TOMORROW
by Christina Mancuso - May 29, 2013

In March 3, 1819, the Civilization Fund Act was passed. It encouraged benevolent societies (Christian missions and the government) to provide education to Native Americans. This meant introducing the Indians to new skills, language and even culture. To author Metha Parisien Bercier, it meant being taken away from her family, thrust into an unfamiliar world and quite possibly turning her back on the life she knew. In her autobiography, “TOMORROW,” MY SISTER SAID; TOMORROW NEVER CAME, she talks about her experiences during this remarkable era and in the process lends a rare glimpse into the journey of her people and the struggles and triumphs they found along the way.
