Based on the story "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen

On New Year's Eve, an over-worked and under-inspired single guy who's had enough of holiday cheer makes a resolution: to stay home and go to bed early. But his reclusive evening is interrupted by an eccentric young woman selling special "full-spectrum holiday light bulbs" to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder. Though her intervention and Hans Christian Andersen's story of The Little Match Girl, our protagonist finally begins to pull out of his funk.

Musicians in grades 7 through 12 who compose or are interested in composition are invited to apply. This after-school program meets once a week from November to May. Jacob's Pillow Dance and MASS MoCA co-present inventive, contemporary ensemble Shen Wei Dance Arts on October 26 and 27 at MASS MoCA's Hunter Center for the Performing Arts. Led by Chinese-born American choreographer Shen Wei, the New York-based dance company blends his signature movement vocabulary with elements of film, theater, new media, and visual art. The program includes Shen Wei's interpretation of Rite of Spring (2003), in honor of the original production's 100th year, and striking new work Collective Measures (2013). The company's performances coincide with the final weekend of MASS MoCA's Xu Bing: Phoenix exhibit, an installation featuring two monumental birds fabricated wholly from materials reaped from construction sites in urban China.

Fabio Luisi, Grammy and ECHO Klassik Award-winner and Principal Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, launches his second season as General Music Director of the Zurich Opera with new productions of Beethoven's Fidelio and Verdi's Aida. Luisi also leads three revivals in the 2013-14 season: Bellini's La straniera, Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann, and Verdi's Don Carlo, and conducts Philharmonia Zurich's 'Big Five' concert series, revealing why he is as venerated in the concert hall as he is in the opera house. 2013 Philadelphia Fringe Festival Kicks Off this Weekend

The 2013 Fringe Festival (Sept. 5-22, 2013), presented by FringeArts (formerly the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe), kicks off this weekend with cutting-edge contemporary theater and dance from as far away as Greece and Norway and as close as our own backyard. Opening-weekend performances include two international works of theater (Jo Stromgren Kompani's The Society and Attis Theatre's AJAX, the madness); two remounts from past Festival seasons (Pig Iron Theatre Company's Pay Up and Swim Pony Performing Arts' The Ballad of Joe Hill); and a world premiere from a much-loved Philadelphia choreographer (Brian Sanders' JUNK, Hush Now Sweet High Heels and Oak).

Getty Museum and CNP's PROMETHEUS BOUND Begins Today

This September, the Getty Museum and CalArts' Center for New Performance (CNP), in association with Trans Arts, will presentPrometheus Bound, the eighth annual outdoor theater production in the Getty Villa's Barbara and Lawrence Fleischman Theater. Featuring a newly-translated text by noted poet and essayist Joel Agee, Prometheus Bound will be directed by Travis Preston, artistic director of CNP and dean of the CalArts School of Theater, and include original music by composer Ellen Reid and celebrated jazz multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia (who will also perform live onstage).
