Stone Soup Presents Blessing's ELEEMOSYNARY Starting 2/18

By:

Stone Soup presents Lee Blessing's Eleemosynary, an evocative play about love, personal identity and the importance of family.

The story is about an eccentric Grandmother--played by Artistic director, founder, Maureen Miko--a brilliant but alienated mother and a precocious spelling bee champion granddaughter.

Praised by Variety Magazine and produced to glowing audience response in productions throughout the country, Eleemosynary takes us on a journey of humor and discovery. It touches on themes we can all relate to about challenged families and the need to be loved for who we really are. At the same time offers a quirky and fresh perspective on the challenges of everyday relationships.

The director, Mari Geasair says that actors and audience both seem to have an unusual relationship to the play. "I am a bit touched and surprised about the response I get when I tell people that I am doing this play. People who have read or seen this show get really excited to hear that it will be done again locally. The response is unlike the one I get for other plays I am working on. It is almost like Eleemosynary has a cult following. That is unusual for such a widely accessible play."

According to Geasair this play has an unusual ability to touch people because "it doesn't fall into easy answers or platitudes and weaves through it a message of love and hope: even for very challenged families." All three women in the play are unusually gifted intellectually, and yet learning how to really listen to and accept each other is not something that comes to them easily. They face the same struggles that most women today face, how to get it all done, how to achieve success in their public life and careers, and how to connect with their family in a meaningful way; All without going crazy, losing their sense of self or their own unique view of the world.

Featuring the many talents of Kara Whitney, Kayti Barnett, & Maureen Miko

Eleemosynary will be staged at Stone Soup, a small, neighborhood-oriented professional theatre started by Maureen Miko in 1996 which has spent the last 13 years offering youth conservatory training, summer acting camps, and high quality adult theatre.
