Safeco Insurance Festál: Seattle Fiestas Patrias celebrates Latin American independence from colonial rule with dance, mariachi music, food, exhibits and children's activities, Sept. 19, noon - 11 p.m. and Sept. 20, noon - 6 p.m. at Center House, Seattle Center Pavilion, Fisher Pavilion and South Fountain Lawn.

Seattle Fiestas Patrias recognizes the diversity of Latino culture in Western Washington. These "Patriotic Holidays" are celebrated throughout various countries in Latin America. The Seattle festival honors the unique cultures of these countries as well as their shared language. The two-day event features a full line-up of lively, soulful and entertaining musical groups, including:
Sept. 19 - Mariachi Infantil, Payasitos Mauchi, Organizacion Cache, Joyas Mestizas, Los Jalapenos, Tumbao, Bailadores de Bronce, Guelaguetza, Desfile de Modas, Miho & Diego Duo, El Grito y Discurso, Rumbagge, DJ Poder Musical, Loen Muchacan and Poder Negro.

Sept. 20 - Mariachi Monarca, Ron Ray Taylor, Bakra Bata, Sabrina Y Los Reyes, Conjunto Violeta Parra, Oziriz, Coffe Band, Zumba, Sin Fronteras, Orchestra Zarabanda, Nobleza de Aquilaia and Cambalache.

Did you know? Gabriel García Márquez, who won the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in 1928 and grew up with his maternal grandparents in northern Colombia between the mountains and the Caribbean Sea. He went to a Jesuit college and consideRed Law, but his studies were soon suspended because of his work as a journalist. In 1954 he was sent to Rome on assignment for his newspaper and since then he has lived mostly abroad - in Paris, Barcelona, Mexico and New York. Márquez is well known for his best seller novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude." Besides his large output of fiction, he has written screenplays and continues to work as a journalist.
