The exhibit features Matt Browning, Drew Daly, Brendan Jansen, Sean M. Johnson, and Shawn Patrick Landis.

It is natural for people to see the everyday as the everyday.  Things are normally defined by what they do or are.  What the artists in this show have in common is that they are interested in another possibility beyond a first glance or a given understanding of what an object or image literally is.  Without contradicting the thingness of their subject matter, they transform it, creating context through rearranging and with that new meaning.

Drew Daly brings forward the potential of an object through simple gestures of addition, subtraction, and combining.  Matt Browning makes apparent the ritualistic qualities of everyday games and events through the manipulation of the objects we use for these events. Brendan Jansen uses photographic processes to break apart presupposed ideas of objectivity and normal interpretation. Sean M. Johnson creates tension through a literal and metaphoric balance of objects that hold personal meaning. Shawn Patrick Landis keeps only the symbol of an object while changing its material makeup and surroundings in order to explore rarely questioned ideas of custom and tradition.
