BSO presents COPLAND TENDER LAND SUITE 6/2 & 4 at BPA

For the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's final concerts this year the orchestra turns to celebrated American composers including John Williams and Aaron Copland. John Williams' music for the Spielberg-directed film Lincoln reveres and mourns the late president. Copland explores socio-economic variability in his opera, The Tender Land. Although the opera itself was not successful, this suite of extracted music has moved audiences with its beautiful melodies and nostalgic overtones. This program also showcases Charlotte Marckx, the 2017 winner of the BSO's annual Young Artist Concerto Competition in a performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Join us as we bring this monumental season to a peaceful and stunning conclusion.

Charlotte Marckx, a 14-year-old violinist from Bellevue, has performed on NPR's From the Top radio program and at their annual gala in Boston. She recently won the Washington State division of the Music Teacher's National Association competition, and will be advancing to the next round this winter. Previous honors include being one of four finalists in the 2015 Johansen International Competition held in DC, and a winner of the Seattle Young Artists Music Festival. Charlotte was the grand prizewinner of the 2015 KING FM Young Artists Awards, and was presented by James Ehnes in a recital with the Seattle Chamber Music Society. She has soloed with several orchestras including the Seattle Philharmonia Northwest and Seattle Festival Orchestras. Most recently, Charlotte appeared alongside her cellist sister, Olivia, performing the Brahms "Double Concerto" with the Kirkland Civic Orchestra. Their duo, Sempre Sisters, performs a variety of genres, and was featured in the 2016 October issue of Strings Magazine. Charlotte began studying the violin with Jan Coleman at age 5 ½ and currently works with Simon James.

Maestro Wesley Schulz made his Seattle Symphony Orchestra debut in a sold-out performance with singer/songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov in February 2015. As the 2014-2015 Conducting Fellow Schulz served as cover conductor for Maestro Ludovic Morlot, led seven world premieres at the Merriman Family Young Composers Workshop, and assisted with recordings for the symphony's Grammy-winning label, Seattle Symphony Media. A leader of educational and family concerts, Schulz makes frequent appearances with the Austin Symphony Orchestra conducting their Halloween Family Concert as well as their Young People's Concerts; the latter reaching over 30,000 Texas students. In addition to serving as Music Director and Conductor of Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra Schulz is Director of Orchestras at University of Puget Sound and Music Director of Seattle Festival Orchestra. Upcoming and recent conducting engagements include the Port Angeles Symphony, Auburn Symphony, Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, Juneau Symphony, and the Venice Symphony Orchestra.

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's final concerts of the season are June 2 and 4, Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. A pre-concert chat is offered on Sunday, June 4 at 2:15 p.m. Tickets, $21 for adults, and $18 for seniors, students, military, and teachers, may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org, by phone at 206.842.8569 or in person at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island.
