Annex Theatre discovers Puerto Rico in Jose Amador's El Hijo Prodigo (Prodigal Son), directed by Mark Fullerton. El Hijo Prodigo brings to life the joys and sorrows of a Commonwealth barely 1100 miles from our shores. El Hijo Prodigo runs Tuesdays and Wednesdays from May 4th through May 19th at Annex Theatre On Capitol Hill, corner of 11th Ave & Pike St. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door or online at www.brownpapertickets.com.

El Hijo Prodigo tells the story of a man's return to his native Puerto Rico after an absence of 22 years. He is soon reunited with--and beguiled by--the history and culture of the island state he once called home. This five-day headlong rush into his ancestral community culminates with the chance for him to face his life, home and family and see them for what they really are. It is a journey through the island's music, mores, legends, people and traditions as performed by one of its prodigal sons.

Jose Amador describes his show as "a sort of subjective travelogue through the island, its culture and history, and my childhood there." Amador says his return home was a rich experience: "That trip ended up being something of a reminder of what life was like on the island; the number of ways I had changed; a flood of childhood memories battling for space in my head; the reintroduction to my home culture and the many aspects of Puerto Rican history and legends that I'd forgotten in the interim."

El Hijo Prodigo marks José's second solo effort; his first , A Walk in the Dark, enjoyed several productions around Seattle between 1995 and 2003. Currently, José is working on a new three actor/multi-charactered, noir-influenced play, Babalu, screenplays for Hypno, Choco Taco, and developing a directing project for the near future. You may have seen his work either as a playwright (Noelle in Death/Sex), as a director (Dark Ride, Picasso at the Lapin Agile[Asst.], Death/Sex, 14/48) and as an actor (Elephant's Graveyard, The American Pilot, 14/48).
ABOUT THE COMPANY: Annex Theatre is a democratic collective of theatre artists dedicated to creating bold new work in an environment of improbability, resourcefulness and risk.

In addition to new plays, Annex Theatre produces radical reinterpretations of classic scripts, ensemble-generated performances and non-linear wild-ass spectacles. Also kicking off the first Friday of every month is our late-night variety show Spin the Bottle, now entering its 12th year!
