Review: LA BOHÈME, The Grange Festival

Puccini's tear-jerker La bohème is always a crowd-pleaser for any opera festival. This production at The Grange Festival is the first opera from French actor-turned-director David Geselson who created it for Opéra National de Nancy Lorraine in 2025. Featuring some strong singing and exquisite playing from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the production loses clarity by Geselson's focus on art and politics.

Review: MASS, Donmar Warehouse

At the end of Mass, currently celebrating its world stage premiere at London's Donmar Warehouse, my visibly moved son says, 'That's the best play I'll see this year.' And he's absolutely right. Director Carrie Cracknell's incredible interpretation of American actor-turned-writer Fran Kranz's stage script based on his 2021 independent film is simple, but also searingly powerful.

Composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and his partner Rachael Hewer eschewed making banana bread during the Covid lockdown and decided to write an opera. After the pandemic, they went on to work on other projects, but unexpectedly Glyndebourne agreed to stage their new work, which made its world premiere last week.
