EDINBURGH 2018: Review: MICHAEL GRIFFITHS: SONGS BY KYLIE, Assembly Image

With an entrance grander than what you would expect in what is essentially a tent, Michael Griffiths burst into the Assembly Bubble in a cloud of smoke and glitter.

Launching straight into "I Should Be So Lucky" this sets the tone for the rest of the performance. This might just be the best party at the festival. Griffiths takes us through Kylie's career history in the first person, from her beginnings in Neighbours to the global superstar that she is today.

The musical numbers are performed with more enthusiasm than I ever thought possible. What struck me as particularly special about this show was how willing the audience were to get involved. A 'Jason' was plucked from the front row to duet on "Especially For You" and was met with riotous applause.

The performance gets a little darker when Griffiths covers Kylie's relationship with Michael Hutchence and covers "Put Your Hand On Your Heart" as more of a ballad than the original release. The show has been well paced as it doesn't seem like a jump to go back into a disco-pop mashup straight afterwards. This is definitely the most fun I've seen a Fringe audience have this month.

Kylie would be proud.
