EDINBURGH 2016: BWW Q&A - Apocalypse Cruise Ship Love Affair

By:

We talk to musical director/co-writer Theo McCabe about his 2016 Edinburgh Fringe show Apocalypse Cruise Ship Love Affair.

What can you tell us about the show?

Apocalypse Cruise Ship Love Affair is the new comedy B-Musical from the team who created 2015 hit comedy Vampire Hospital Waiting Room.

The show follows the eccentric Captain Bleufonde's journey into the heart of an apocalyptic storm to attempt to resurrect his dead lover, and his passengers attempts to find love at the end of the world.

What was the inspiration?

Our company was formed creating a show called Vampire Hospital Waiting Room - which was an in-joke at our student theatre, that someone needed to create a show with that name because of the abundance of chairs, doctors coats and vampire capes in the props cupboard.

That idea stuck in my head as an interesting show to make, because it was a title that had everyone and talking and laughing before anything had been done. I think a big part of why it worked was because of the rule of three - vampire capes, hospital gowns and chairs - Vampire Hospital Waiting Room.

To make our second show we decided to try and expand on the same formula - so chucked three new ideas together, including a B-movie horror threat and a location, to try and make a catchy new title. Hence Apocalypse Cruise Ship Love Affair. After we had the title we just kind of wrote it, using any influences on those topics that we could find on the internet. One thing that comes to mind was a beautifully crafted essay on luxury cruising by David Foster Wallace.

And the music is all original?

Yep. It's all written by myself. Totally original.

How has audience response been so far?

We haven't had our previews yet!

Who would you recommend comes to see Apocalypse Cruise Ship Love Affair?

Fans of the Vampire Hospital Waiting Room - we had around 6,000 people see the show last year and any of those guys who liked it should come and see our next offering, it's very much along the same vein. Also fans of musicals, fans of dark, daft comedy. Fans of Garth Marenghi's Dark Place and Nicholas Cage compilation videos.

Timings and ticket information for Apocalypse Cruise Ship Love Affair are available on the edfringe website.
