Asolo's 67th Season Opener, "Come From Away," creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for all who attend. As you step into the venue, you are greeted by the lively musical sounds of Newfoundland, played by the cheerful musicians of the show.

The main bar takes center stage in the theatre, offering a perfect view of the charming music that fills the theater - the whistles, accordion tunes, fiddles, and foot-stomping rhythms combine to set a joyous mood that promises a fantastic time! The main stage, which is designed to resemble a bar (though through the stage magic of theater changes repeatedly) encourages the audience to relax, grab a drink, and immerse themselves in the performance. Director Peter Rothstien welcomed everyone warmly, underscoring the diversity and talent of the over 100 artists involved in the production, a fact that is highlighted in the spectacular presentation which is “Come From Away”.

"Come From Away" is a heartwarming musical that tells the true story of 7,000 airline passengers who found themselves stranded in Gander, Newfoundland, after US airspace was closed on September 11, 2001. The show highlights the incredible kindness of the local townspeople who opened their homes and hearts to the stranded travelers, creating lasting bonds and friendships between them. It's a celebration of humanity and the power of compassion in times of need. Through the different characters' experiences, trials and tribulations, we see how crises have the potential to bring out the best in people, encouraging them to act with more care and kindness towards one another.

There are also emotionally challenging scenes depicting the well-known media coverage of September 11th. These scenes stir up memories from 24 years ago (24 YEARS!?!??!), yet they don't diminish the impact of witnessing them anew. The show also portrays various forms of love - romantic, maternal, and communal. And on the opposite end it showcases instances of miscommunication, language differences, and racism, presenting a well-extensive view of human interactions in times of crisis.

With a stage cast of 12, each actor took on the role of multiple characters, showing versatility and talent. Among the standout performances, Charlie Clark portrayed a range of hilarious characters with exceptional shine and charisma. His physicality and lively demeanor undoubtedly brought joy to the audience. Zummy Mohammed delivered a memorable performance by gracefully portraying two juxtaposed characters, one outspoken and the other demure, demonstrating his remarkable acting skills and versatility.

“Come From Away” is playing at Asolo Repertory Theatre through December 28th. Evening and Matinee shows are still available at Events | Asolo Repertory Theatre.
