THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES Now Playing at Boxcar Theatre Thru 2/14
Eve Ensler's sensational hit, The Vagina Monologues, revolutionized society's views of the female body. Enlisting the talents of five female artists -- Elinor Bell, Erin Cote, Michelle Ianiro, Sarah Savage, Claire Zawa -- Boxcar Theatre's Project V offers an updated perspective on the monologues that shook a nation and changed a world. Ensler's original text will be presented alongside new interpretations based on the same theme. From sketch comedy to improv, music to dance, stand-up comedy to the int'l perspective, Ensler's work stands the test of time with fresh new twist.
Project V runs February 4 - 14 at Boxcar's South of Market home stage in San Francisco, 505 Natoma Street, at 6th.
"What excites me most about this project that it is completely female driven," says Boxcar Artistic Director Nick A. Olivero . "From the director to performers to technical team, it is a creative mix of extremely talented and local female artists. It also means Peter and I get some well deserved time off from our jam packed season."
On Sunday February 14th all the female company members of Boxcar Theatre will present a special performance of The Vagina Monologues in its entirety as apart of the national V Day celebration. All proceeds go to V-Day, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to ending violence against women and girls. Tickets for this special event are $25.
Dedicated to high visual concepts and transformative theatre, Olivero and Matthews provide San Francisco with its most innovative and thought-provoking theatrical experiences through its "Boxcar" and "Sidecar" productions. Boxcar's commitment is to produce "Experiential Theatre" and is proud to be known as a "Directors' Theatre." This next season Boxcar re-imagines the familiar by taking well-known plays and turning them on their head. "You have to hand it to Boxcar; as other companies scale back and tighten belts, it steps forward and belts out scales." (Rob Avila, SF Bay Guardian)
