BWW Review: THE SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA at The Jacobs Music Center

Jahja Ling was the San Diego Symphony Orchestra's conductor and music director for 13 years. During that time he was responsible for hiring the 70 new musicians who participated in a huge leap upward in the orchestra's precision and sound. Now the SDSO's Conductor Laureate, he has returned to appreciative warm applause in each of the two seasons since he retired as permanent conductor. For his second appearance this year he chose an all-French program: the Overture to Benvenuto Cellini by Hector Berlioz, Francis Poulenc's Concerto for Organ, Timpani and Strings, and the third symphony of Camille Saint-Saens, his 'Organ Symphony.' The guest organist was the talented Chelsea Chen.

Patio Playhouse Community Theater presents Animales Nocturnos by Juan Mayorga, with an English translation, Nocturnal, by David Johnston. Written in 2003, this tautly written and suspenseful play is set in motion by a secret: Short Man knows that Tall Man is an undocumented immigrant. He offers to keep this secret in exchange for Tall Man's friendship. The plot thickens as their respective wives become involved, and the price for silence begins to rise. Patio Playhouse's production of Animales Nocturnos and Nocturnal will be a West Coast premiere, performed in both English and Spanish by the same cast of Latinx actors. The cast includes Sam Kohler (Bajo/Short Man), Lettie DeAnda(Baja/Short Woman), Victor Reveles (Alto/Tall Man) and Melba Novoa (Alta/Tall Woman.)
Travis LeMont Ballenger Joins Justin Waldman As Associate Artistic Director Of The Old Globe

Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein today announced the appointment of Travis LeMont Ballenger as Associate Artistic Director. The Globe will have two people in this key position, as Ballenger joins Associate Artistic Director Justin Waldman, who has been at the Globe since 2011. Ballenger and Waldman will report jointly to Edelstein. Ballenger will assume his artistic duties at The Old Globe on May 1.
