John Alexander to Step Down as Diversionary Executive Director

The Board of Trustees of Diversionary Theatre announced today that John E. Alexander will step down from his post as Executive Director effective November 3.

"We are very grateful for John's vision, passion and leadership over the past 2 and ½ years," said Matthew Thomason, Board President. "While disappointed he is not able to remain with us longer, we are appreciative of the many lasting contributions he has made to the growth and professionalism of our theatre."

Alexander will remain full-time through the end of October, then continue as needed to consult with the board on the transition, finalize the nearly complete 2014 season, and assist with a long-range planning project currently under way.

Alexander takes particular pride in expanding Diversionary's focus on developing new works. "It's fitting that my 'finale' at Diversionary is the opening of She-Rantulas from Outer Space - in 3D!, a completely new play written by local artists," said Alexander. "Enabling the creative teams behind the new works Harmony, Kansas; when last we flew, Learn to Be Latina, Miss Kitty's Wild West Revue - as well as other Cabaret acts and shows in development - is why I took this job. These shows (along with Yank!,Dear Harvey and The Daddy Machine before my time) are some of the most successful shows artistically and financially for the company. I hope Diversionary patrons and leadership will continue to grow the Theatre's capacity to tell new stories of the LGBT community in increasingly entertaining, exciting and wide-reaching ways."

Thomason added, "Additionally, John has been instrumental in helping build the strong Board that will help make this transition as smooth as possible. The ten outstanding community volunteers I work with on our Board have the knowledge, skill-set and commitment to navigate us through this transition and build a strong Diversionary for the future."

Effective immediately, day-to-day management will be overseen by the Board Executive Committee until the search for a new full-time Executive Director gets under way. The interim management team consists of Board leaders Thomason, Darrell Netherton, Todd Nelms and Brian Zotti. Additionally, several other Trustees will take important leadership roles in marketing and fund raising efforts, supporting the current Diversionary staff and creative teams.

Alexander did not announce specific career plans once he completes his duties at Diversionary. He and his husband will stay in San Diego while John devotes time to several personal projects.
