By:

Rehearsals are now underway for Cygnet Theatre's upcoming production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Co-directed by Cygnet Artistic Director Sean Murray and James Vasquez, the cast includes Jacob Caltrider, Geno Carr, Sarah Cuc, Steve Gunderson, Trevor Hollingsworth, Ashley Linton, Cindy Marty, Sean Murray, Kürt Norby, Deborah Gilmour Smyth and Tom Zohar. Sweeney Todd runs March 18th through April 25th, 2010 at Cygnet's Old Town Theatre. Press Opening is March 27th at 8pm. The production is sponsored in part by Florence Cohen and Robert Shapiro.
Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a chilling, suspenseful and heart-pounding masterpiece of barber-ism and culinary crime. With a mix of macabre and howling funny dark humor, we meet Sweeney Todd, a barber seeking revenge, and Mrs. Lovett, the proprietress of the downstairs pie shop. Together, the two take their passions to harrowing heights and soon have the people of 19th century London lining up for meat pies!

The cast of Sweeney Todd comprises a list of local and regional favorites, including Jacob Caltrider (The History Boys, A Christmas Carol) as Anthony, Geno Carr (Cygnet's Assassins reading 2009) as The Beadle, Sarah Cuc as the Birdseller, Steve Gunderson as Judge Turpin, Trevor Hollingsworth (A Little Night Music, It's A Wonderful Life) as Jonas Fogg, Ashley Linton as Johanna, Cindy Marty as the Beggar Woman, Kürt Norby (Cygnet's Assassins reading 2009) as Pirelli and Tom Zohar (The History Boys, The Little Foxes) as Tobias. Portraying the scheming barber and the resourceful pie maker, Cygnet Theatre is delighted to unite the creative talents of Cygnet Theatre's Artistic Director Sean Murray as Sweeney Todd and Lamb's Players Theatre's Associate Artistic Director Deborah Gilmour Smyth as Mrs. Lovett.

The music of Sweeney Todd has a mystical power, with over eighty percent of the production set to music, either sung or orchestrated underneath dialogue. Cygnet's production will include the musical talents of Diana Elledege on Cello, Charlie Reuter on Piano/Keyboard, Dave Rumley on Percussion and two additional musicians TBA on Brass and Woodwind. Charlie Reuter also serves as Musical Director.

The production team includes the co-direction of Artistic Director Sean Murray and James Vasquez; Set Design by Sean Fanning; Lighting Design by Eric Lotze; Sound Design by Matt Lescault-Wood; Properties Design by Bonnie L.
