Overtime Theater Hosts UGLY PEOPLE Auditions May 22
AUDITIONS FOR UGLY PEOPLE, A WORLD PREMIERE COMEDY
Written by James Venhaus, Directed by Kyle Gillette
Auditions: 6 - 9 pm, Sunday, May 22, 2011 @ The Overtime Theater
It has been said that "Politics is show business for ugly people." And never have there been a more ugly time in politics than now. In this new comedy by the author of The Happy Couple and Broken Record, two candidates for office take two wildly different approaches to their campaigns. Each has help from some of the ugliest people in Washington. Ugly People is the show that asks the question, "What if running for office was like a game show, or a realty show?" Maybe it already is.
Synopsis:
Ugly People follows the story of two candidates for office, Scott and Rob as they run for local, state and finally national office. The action of the play often shifts back and forth between the two stories until, at the end, the two candidates debate and the audience votes for their favorite. After the audience vote, the candidates give a victory or concession speech based on the results of the audience vote.
Characters:
Scott - an earnest man who runs for office out of a sincere desire to help his fellow man. Sucker.
Rob - A vapid, inexperienced lout who is tapped to run for office by a group of political consultants because his wife is attractive. Polling shows that candidates with attractive wives do well with voters.
Amanda - Scott's campaign aide. 20's. Recent college graduate.
Christy - Scott's Wife. 30's - 40's. Wants to help Scott, but sometimes is threatened by the demands placed on his time.
Chelsea- The brains behind Rob's candidacy. A comedic Lady MacBeth.
Ensemble - Various pollsters, consultants, aides, voters and members of the media.
Auditioners should prepare a one-minute monologue. Please bring an acting resume and headshot.
Showdates: August 19 - September 17, 2011. 8 pm Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays. One 3 pm Sunday matinee on September 4.
