Gamm Theatre Opens Season 28 With AFTER THE REVOLUTION Tonight, 9/13

By:

The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) opens Season 28 with the Rhode Island premiere of After the Revolution by rising American playwright Amy Herzog (4,000 MilesBelleville).  Gamm Artistic Director Tony Estrella directs Herzog's engrossing contemporary drama about a loving clan of leftist "idealists". At the center is the story of Emma Joseph (Diana Buirski) and her father, Ben (Jim O'Brien), whose close bond, built on shared politics, is shattered by a family revelation.

After the Revolution runs from tonight, September 13 through October 14 at The Gamm Theatre, 172 Exchange St., Pawtucket, RI. Tickets: $36 and $45 (depending on day/time); preview and press performances (September 13-17) just $26. Discounts for subscribers, groups of 10 or more, seniors and students. Tickets at 401-723-4266 or gammtheatre.org

Hailed by the New York Times as one of Off Broadway's "vital new playwrights," Herzog has gone beyond the fractured family to create a timely drama about ideals in an age of apathy.

"With election season in full swing, it is our privilege to kick off season 28 with a powerful reminder that all politics are intensely personal, that which lever we pull (or do not) in the voting booth is an expression of the passion that inflames us at the family dinner table. I've been tracking After The Revolution since it premiered at Williamstown Theatre Festival two summers ago, followed by a hit Off-Broadway run. I am proud to bring our audience the local premiere of what to my mind is a quintessential Gamm play," Estrella said.

Set on the cusp of our young century, it's a thematic sequel of sorts, an explosive contemporary echo of Clifford OdetsAwake and Sing !  (seen here in 2009).  In the vein of Odets' masterpiece and the great plays of Arthur Miller, Ms. Herzog's After The Revolution reinvigorates the classic American family drama with a story about our responsibility to both whom we are and to those we love that resonates beyond the dining room table to the world."
