RIHA Presents The Lost Colony, Enters 73rd Season

By:

The Lost Colony is the "grandfather" of all outdoor dramas and is produced by the Roanoke Island Historical Association (RIHA), a non-profit whose mission is to celebrate the history of the first English colonies on Roanoke Island, North Carolina.

Commissioned by Roanoke Island residents, the show was originally written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Green. It recounts the events leading to the disappearance of the English colonists who settled there over 400 years ago.

Lost Colony premiered in 1937 and was intended to run only through the end of that summer. When Franklin D. Roosevelt attended that August, the nation's eyes were fixed on the production, assuring that there would be subsequent seasons. There have been seventy-one since. The 2010 season begins May 28th.

The show has been a theatrical destination seen by over three million theatre-goers since its initial run. It has also been the training ground for over 5,000 actors and technicians, including such personalities as Andy Griffith, Terrance Mann, Ted Talley, and William Ivey Long. The beach-front locale has attracted star performers including Lynn Redgrave and Colleen Dewhurst.
