S h e w a s a n e v i l w o m a n ! The diatribe of the betrayed Medea under Heiner Müller’s black pen turns into a frenetic complaint of the decapitated Medusa from Jean Tardieu’s monodrama. Indeed, when the female desire for revenge peaks it borders with surrealism. Therefore playrights of all times from Euripides and Seneca to Grillparzer and Anouilh gaped with fascination into that abyss. And that is why their plays are still staged. The more so when that fury is expressed by singing. Even Cherubini’s stylish version from 200 years back makes a deep impression. Seems like Pascal Dusapin’s chamber opera has to cope not only with one of the most terrifying Greek myths but also with a powerful competition. Still the grim and revealing text by Müller and Heather Buck’s glassy soprano make it possible for contemporary audience to shiver during the performance of Medeamaterial just like the spectators of an ancient tragedy did.
