Pittsburgh Playhouse Will Open This Fall, Featuring Three New Theatre Spaces Downtown

According to American Theatre, Pittsburgh will be getting a new theatre downtown this fall, the Pittsburgh Playhouse. The new theatre will open on October 12 and will house the REP, a professional theatre company as well as a theatre for young audiences and the theatre and dance departments from Point Park University.

The building will be four stories and 92,000 square feet. It will contain three different academic and theatre spaces, a scene shop, prop shop, costume shop, sound stage, and cafe.

The three theatre spaces are various sizes. The main theatre will seat 535, the transformational theatre will seat 250, and the black box theatre, 100.

The theatre's opening season will include Cabaret, Sunday in the Park with George, and History Boys.

"For the inaugural season in our beautiful new home, we chose groundbreaking productions that explore themes of politics, gender identity and culture which seem particularly fitting for these turbulent times," said Ronald Allan-Lindblom, artistic director of the Conservatory of Performing Arts and the Pittsburgh Playhouse.

The Pittsburgh Playhouse was designed by Paul Westlake of the Cleveland architecture firm DLR Group|Westlake Reed Leskosky. The capital campaign for the space, headed by Point Park University, cost $74 million. So far, the university has raised $45 million.
