Alejandro Canelos' 10-Minute Dramas at The Invisible Theatre

When the mercury climbs and the pavement shimmers, Invisible Theatre has your escape. This July, the beloved Tucson institution presents Alejandro Canelos' 10-Minute Dramas — an evening of eight lightning-fast, wildly inventive short plays that promise to be as surprising and satisfying as a monsoon after a long, hot week.

Written by Tucson playwright Alejandro Canelos, the eight pieces range gloriously across the map of human experience. How does one get bitten by a rattlesnake? What does a woodpecker with a concussion sound like — and why can't it stop? What happens when teenage angst collides with adult cluelessness? And what, exactly, is the proper protocol for dropping your pants at the grocery store? From the absurd to the achingly real, Canelos brings a playful intelligence and a Tucsonan's sharp eye to every ten minutes he puts on stage.

The evening is helmed by two of Invisible Theatre's most dynamic directors. Managing Artistic Director Betsy Kruse Craig and director Carrie Cole bring their combined vision and theatrical instincts to a production that demands speed, precision, and the willingness to pivot from comedy to heartbreak and back again — sometimes within the same scene.

Bringing Canelos' characters to life is a quartet of some of Tucson's finest theatrical talent: Josh Parra, Hannah Turner, Sean Hazen, and Lori Hunt. Each performer takes on multiple roles across the eight pieces, navigating rattlesnake wisdom, adolescent misery, avian neurological disorders, and supermarket mortification with equal commitment and craft.

"This is theatre at its most immediate and most fun," said Craig. "Alejandro writes with a voice that is completely his own — funny, surprising, and underneath it all, deeply human. And in this intimate space, with this cast, these ten minutes fly by. We cannot wait to share this with Tucson audiences."
