According to Costumer Allison Bauer, John Perovich's new play, unexpected, "follows a mother and her three daughters as she tries to protect them from the pain and heartache of love. Coupled with a mysterious merchant, a love sick boy next door, a snake-charming girl, and a mysterious flying man, the daughters go on a journey to discover their own truths about love," she said.

Megan O'Connor, hair and makeup designer, said "the theme that stands out the strongest to me is that no matter how hard you try to control every aspect of life, it will constantly and continuously surprise you. We should always make plans and always think ahead, but life will do what it wants to us and we need to be flexible enough to get back up and keep moving forward for all of those unexpected ups and downs."

Assistant Stage Manager Sarah Ayers said the play is about "love from family, whether it's biological or not, and learning to forgive and accept others for who they are."

Sound designer Ilana Lydia said," unexpected is an epic fairytale which is grounded in the real paradoxes of love and sacrifice. Both full of whimsy and dancing to a logic of its own, the play manages to sweep up its viewers with hope and wonder."

Bauer added, "unexpected is honest and true. Sometimes love isn't as happy as we'd like and sometimes it is so unexpected that you don't know what to do with it. It's a lovable story about love and it is heartfelt and warm."

Ayers said she thinks audiences should see unexpected "because it's an uplifting and funny show, with a great message for all."

For Lydia, the unexpected experience has been profound. "There's nothing more rewarding," she said, "than seeing a new work take off into the great big world. This play has a strong future ahead of it, and audiences will enjoy getting to know it before it hits big. On a more personal note," she added, "I would recommend unexpected because it speaks to the heart and shines the way to a world with more love and hope. Not bad for a $25 ticket price," she concluded.

Brelby partners with local downtown Glendale businesses to offer more options for audience members. By showing their digital ticket, audiences can receive 10% off of their bill at the Hop Stop Diner, 10% off of any entrée at Haus Murphy's Restaurant, and 10% off of a customer's bill at the Olde Towne Glendale (OTG) Beer & Wine Bar or the Gaslight Inn.

UNEXPECTED plays May 19-20, 26-27, June 2-3, 9-10 at 7:30pm May 21, 28, June 4 at 2:00PM. Tickets are available by visiting the official website at brelby.com/tickets. General admission is $25 per performance. Admission to unexpected is included in the benefits of Brelby's ShowGO subscription: brelby.com/showgo.
