The Nash Series Presents EXPLORING MASTERS OF JAZZ Tonight

April is Jazz Appreciation month and in recognition, the Nash announces a new series of classes for the public to learn about the history of jazz by examining the great masters. This four-part series will be led by ASU jazz instructor, Dr. Jeffry Libman, who will present four weekly Wednesday morning sessions in April each focusing on a different jazz instrument and its master musicians and vocalists. Dr. Libman will lead the discussions with histories and recordings from the great masters such as John Coltrane, Dizzie Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Billie Holiday. Classes will be held each Wednesday in March from 10 am - 11:30 am at The Nash, 110 E. Roosevelt, in downtown Phoenix.

Exploring the Jazz Masters of the Tenor Saxophone

April 1, 10:00-11:30am
Cost: $25

ASU jazz instructor Dr. Jeffrey Libman will examine the lives and music of a selection of great tenor saxophonists. The class is intended for jazz aficionados and those who would like to learn more about jazz. Instruments not required! The class will consist primarily of active listening to exemplary recordings with interspersed guided discussion. Come learn about jazz masters such as Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and John Coltrane.


Exploring the Jazz Masters of the Trumpet
April 8, 10:00-11:30am
Cost: $25

ASU jazz instructor Dr. Jeffrey Libman will examine the lives and music of a selection of great trumpet players. The class is intended for jazz aficionados and those who would like to learn more about jazz. Instruments not required! The class will consist primarily of active listening to exemplary recordings with interspersed guided discussion. Come learn about jazz masters such as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis.


Exploring the Masters of Jazz Piano
April 15, 10:00-11:30am

Cost: $25
ASU jazz instructor Dr. Jeffrey Libman will examine the lives and music of a selection of great pianists. The class is intended for jazz aficionados and those who would like to learn more about jazz. Instruments not required! The class will consist primarily of active listening to exemplary recordings with interspersed guided discussion. Come learn about jazz masters such as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, and Bill Evans.

Exploring the Great Jazz Vocalists
April 22, 10:00-11:30am
Cost: $25
ASU jazz instructor Dr. Jeffrey Libman will examine the lives and music of a selection of great singers. The class is intended for jazz aficionados and those who would like to learn more about jazz. Instruments not required! The class will consist primarily of active listening to exemplary recordings with interspersed guided discussion. Come learn about jazz masters such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan.

Located on the corner of 1st Street and Roosevelt on Roosevelt Row, The Nash has become the center for Jazz in the Valley with musicians and bands from a variety of styles featured at the venue each weekend.

The Nash is committed to the development of future jazz musicians and hosts a wide array of vocal and instrumental lessons to encourage ensemble and improvisational work.
