The Brelby Theatre Company located in Historic Downtown Glendale, is thrilled to be kicking off their 8th season with the world premiere of Windfall by Executive Director, Brian Maticic. The piece is one that Maticic has been developing for several years, and seems aptly timed given the recent excitement surrounding the potential for life changing lottery winnings.

The show centers around three millennials, who have taken three very different paths. "Trent is irresponsible, lazy, and a slob, but for some reason there's something so charming about him you keep him around. He's funny and fun, and has those little moments that make him endearing," explains Maticic. "Owen is that millennial who is doing everything you're supposed to, but in the realities of the new economy still can't get ahead. He graduated college and works in a stable job, and dreams of opening his own business, but in the wake of the great recession, and with friends like Trent, he can't quite get a foot hold. He's caring and compassionate, but at wits end, and out of patience for Trent's immaturity." The play is driven by the dynamic of these two men, and their relationships with Olivia. "She is the student. The millennial that sees education as the key to success," notes Maticic. "She is pursuing her masters in hopes of finding or building a fruitful career after school. She's smart and driven, but sensitive and caring."

As the play takes off, Owen has had enough of Trent's lazy and manipulative behavior. Owen issues an ultimatum. Can Trent find a job and pay back months of rent and utilities within two weeks? It's hard to say, because Trent decides to fake his own death in an effort to dodge his student debts and start over in another country. However, just after the deed is done, Trent wins the lottery. In an effort to collect his winnings, he attempts to enlist Owen's help. Will Owen help him follow through for the chance to fund his dream business, and get closer to Olivia? Every lie comes with a price.

While action centers around the three millennials, the appeal goes beyond that. Director Fernando Perez states, "I think everyone can relate to the show. We've all known people like Trent, Owen, Olivia." Playwright, Brian Maticic agrees, "Millennials, parents of millennials, or people who have ever known a millennial and especially anyone who has ever been owed money by a millennial. Or anyone who has ever wished they could win the lottery to wipe away their debt. People who like light hearted plays, and people who like challenging dramatic plays." This dark comedy explores a wide variety of themes, and ranges from high energy comedy, to dramatic explorations of grief and loss. The piece is well timed, after Brelby recently received a windfall of its own in the form of the First Bank Elevator Pitch contest.

Windfall features Brelby ensemble members David Magadan as Owen, Devon Mahon as Trent, Shelby Maticic as Olivia, Megan O'Connor as Theresa, Mat Vansen as Randy and making her Brelby MainStage debut, Chelsea Jauregui as Mom.
