Known for his roles in films such as The Killing Fields, A Room With a View and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, English actor Julian Sands returns to the stage in A Celebration of Harold Pinter. In this powerful solo show directed by John Malkovich, Sands combines the late Harold Pinter's poems and prose to create a fresh and intimate portrait of the Nobel laureate and his literary legacy.
One of the most influential English dramatists, Pinter is known for plays such as The Birthday Party (1957) and the Tony Award-winning The Homecoming (1965), as well as screenplays, including The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981) starring Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep. In 2005 Pinter was honored with the Nobel Prize for Literature. The selection committee cited him as a writer "who, in his plays, uncovers the precipice under everyday prattle and forces entry into oppression's closed rooms."
In 2005 Sands was approached by Pinter to prepare a selection of his poems for a special presentation in London. Pinter "apprenticed" Sands, spending hours sharing his thoughts on how his work should be delivered. This extraordinary collaboration became the foundation for the wonderfully rich, humorous and fascinating performance that is A Celebration of Harold Pinter.
A Celebration of Harold Pinter was performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2011 and in New York at The Irish Repertory Theatre in 2012, followed by engagements at Steppenwolf in Chicago, Herbst Theatre in San Francisco, as well as in Los Angeles, Mexico City, Budapest, London and Paris. It was nominated for a 2013 Drama Desk Award.
