CINDERELLA: normal show times resume. A beautiful girl, a wicked step-family, a fairy godmother, a handsome prince and transparent footwear all add up to true love (and lots of laughs) in this extremely popular version of the famous fairy tale. Performed with elegant hand puppets. Written by Nancy Smith and Laura Bonar, directed by Nancy Smith.

JANUARY 26-30
KATHPUTLI: The title of the performance is "Kathputl." Kathputli is the name of the puppet tradition and translates to mean "wooden doll."

Prakash Bhatt, a native of Jaipur in Rajasthan, belongs to one of the most prestigious and important families of Indian puppeteers who have been creating and performing with puppets for more than twenty generations. The show is an amazing array of entertaining and colorful string puppets, including the Maharajah and his horse, a snake charmer, juggler, magician and dancers.

The uniqueness of this type of marionette is that the puppets are manipulated by strings but without a control. There is nothing between the puppeteer's hands and the strings. This very ancient tradition began in the seventh century when a Maharajah from Rajasthan asked puppeteers and musicians in that time to create a show for amusement. The resulting creation became popular in the villages, the street and the schools. Even today in the 21st century, adults and children alike are enthralled by the magic that is Kathputli.

Puppeteers from the Great Arizona Puppet Theater were privileged to see Prakash Bhatt perform at an international Puppet Festival in France last year and immediately initiated plans to bring him to the U.S., where this is form of puppetry is seldom seen. Don't miss this One Week Only engagement!
