Black Theatre Troupe presents CAROLINE, OR CHANGE

Race, rage and civil rights are at the heart of this acclaimed, deeply personal story by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of Angels in America, Tony Kushner, in CAROLINE, OR CHANGE, produced by Black Theatre Troupe, September 15-30, 2017, directed by David J. Hemphill, with musical direction by Brenda Hankins and choreographed by Laurie Trygg.

CAROLINE, OR CHANGE centers on Caroline Thibodeaux, a divorced, middle-aged African-American woman who is working as a maid for a Jewish family in the suburban enclave of Lake Charles, Louisiana in 1963. She finds herself in the middle of a family conflict when eight-year-old Noah Gellman's stepmother asks her to keep any money she finds in the child's pockets while doing the laundry, in the hopes of teaching Noah to better value money. The conflict comes to a haunting conclusion as Caroline's family faces Christmas and the Gellman's prepare for Chanukah. R&B, Soul, Klezmer and gospel music and traditional Jewish melodies provide the breathtaking and emotional sound for this provocative and powerful tale.

The musical was first workshopped in May 1999 at New York's Public Theater. Director George C. Wolfe continued to workshop the musical at The Public Theater through 2003, when the show finally opened. After a successful run Off-Broadway, it transferred to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and ran from May 2, 2004 to August 29, 2004 for a total of 136 performances, starring Tonya Pinkins in the title role. Despite its relatively short run, it was critically acclaimed and nominated for several Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book (Tony Kushner), Best Score (Jeanine Tesori), Best Actress (Tonya Pinkins) and Best Direction (George C. Wolfe). Anika Noni Rose won the Tony for CHANGE as Best Featured Actress.

Songs featured in the show include: Noah Down the Stairs, Laundry Finish, Santa Comin' Caroline, and I Saw Three Ships.
