Black Theatre Troupe Presents SIMPLY SIMONE

Prodigy. Superstar. Activist and Exile. As one of the true divas of the 20th Century, vocal powerhouse Nina Simone defied classification and defined a generation. Four women give us an intimate look at her music and lay bare the rich legacy of this icon.

Black Theatre Troupe continues its smash season with SIMPLY SIMONE, from April 12-28 at the Helen K. Mason Performing Arts Center, 1333 E. Washington, Phoenix AZ 85034. Tickets are $38 and on sale at blacktheatretroupe.org or by calling (602) 258-8129

Nina Simone mastered all genres with a legendary command of the American songbook and genius interpretations of Broadway classics, rock and roll, soul stirring gospel, jazz and the blues. The title role of Nina Simone will be performed by four outstanding actresses, portraying the various stages of Simone's life. Simply Simone features Jennifer Robinson, Kenyata Christia White, Kylelashay Draper and Sharmaine King. Patdro Harris is Stage Director and Choreographer, with Brenda Hankins as Musical Director. SIMPLY SIMONE features a live jazz band of piano, bass, drums and guitar.

SIMPLY SIMONE was written by Robert Neblett and David Grapes II with musical arrangements by Vince di Mura.

Since 1970, The Black Theatre Troupe has promoted excellence in the performing arts with an emphasis on people of color. From its proud but humble beginnings as a grassroots creative outlet for restless, talented youth in the 70s, the Black Theatre Troupe is now a highly recognized theatre producing quality plays which reflect the heart and soul of the African-American experience.
