Rawk U School of Music Comes To Walking Fish Theatre

By: Mar. 06, 2010

On Friday, March 6 for two shows, Philadelphia's Rawk School of Music will present a live performance of their adult rock students at Walking Fish Theatre, 2509 Frankford Avenue in Kensington. Tickets for the event are only $5.00 and can be purchased online at www.walkingfishtheatre.com or at the door. Two bands will be featured in the show: The Power Pop Class and The Beatles Class.

Power Pop is a sub genre of rock that denotes a brand of rock that is heavy and very melodically catchy at the same time. Some of the bands that we will be covering in the power pop class are: The Lemoheads, Elvis Costello, Fountains of Wayne, and The Jam. In the Beatles class we are doing an overview of their entire career.

The School of Rawk program was started by Daniel Cullen in the fall of 2008. It started out as a one-on-one guitar lesson, but the school expanded its reach in summer of 2009 when it started offering Rock Classes for Adults. These classes involve getting a group of 2-4 adults together and rehearsing them as a rock band. Daniel coaches the students on how to play together and sometimes plays or does lead vocals for them as well. The adult students can play guitar, drums, or bass, or vocals. The classes are always themed, and in the past the school has offered: Classic Rock, Singer/Songwriter, and Beatles classes. One of the things that sets Rawk U apart from other programs, is that it also serves as an unofficial networking hub for students looking to form bands. This past summer, after the conclusion of the classic rock classes, members from the two classes combined forces, and formed their own band outside of the school.
