Disney Wins Lawsuit Against Regional Production Featuring Spider-Man
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Lancaster, Pa.'s American Music Theatre has agreed not to proceed with their planned production -- BROADWAY: NOW & FOREVER -- which would have featured aspects from SPIDER-MAN, MARY POPPINS and THE LION KING for which the company had no license to reproduce.
The parties just reached a settlement after Disney sued AMT over their mash-up production in September 2013.
In the middle of the dispute, Stan Lee Media Inc. stepped in and attempted to issue a license to AMT so the show could go on, but a judge ruled against SLMI's ability to distribute rights to the comic book character.
SLMI has since conceded any ownership rights to Spider-Man and, along with the theatre company, has agreed to "a permanent injunction where they can't contest, challenge or interfere with Disney's ownership to Spider-Man, Mary Poppins and The Lion King, nor obviously infringe the copyright and trademarks."
American Music Theatre also paid an undisclosed amount of money as part of the settlement and will be required to pay $25,000 in damages if they violate the injunction.
