Civic Theatre of Allentown Holds CABARET Auditions 2/28

Civic Theatre of Allentown will hold auditions for its May 2011 production of Kander & Ebb's iconic musical "Cabaret" at 7 pm on Monday, February 28, 2011. Auditions will be in the rehearsal hall above Civic's Nineteenth Street Theatre at 527 N 19th Street in Allentown. If necessary, callbacks will be held on Tuesday, February 29, 2011. Alternate audition times will not be available.

All roles in the production are open. Here is a list of characters for the cast of "Cabaret."

Emcee - Male 18 to 40s - Strong Vocals - Moderate Dance. Baritone
Sally Bowles - Female 18-30s. Strong Vocals, Mezzo Soprano. Moderate Dance. British accent.
Clifford Bradshaw - Male 20s-40s. Strong Vocals, Baritone/Tenor.
Fraulein Schneider - Female 50s-60s. Strong Vocals, Alto/Mezzo Soprano. German accent.
Herr Schultz - Male 50s-70s. Strong Vocals, Baritone/Tenor. German accent.
Ernst Ludwig - Male 30s-50s. Moderate to Strong Vocals, Baritone. German accent.
Fraulein Kost - Female 20s-40s. Strong Vocals, Alto/Mezzo Soprano. German accent.
Kit Kat Dancers - Male & Female - Age range is open - Moderate to Strong Vocals and Dance
Kit Kat Klub Patrons - Male & Female - Age range is open - Moderate Vocals

Actors who wish to audition should do the following:
· Prepare 18-36 bars of a song from "Cabaret," or a similar musical theatre genre that shows your range and experience. An accompanist will be at the audition; actors are expected to provide sheet music.
· Bring a headshot or picture in which your face is clearly visible.
Bring a list of your conflicts from audition date until the show's close (May 22).

With a book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, "Cabaret" debuted on Broadway in 1966 to immediate acclaim. The production spawned an Oscar-winning 1972 film, as well as two major revivals, including a 1998 New York production that exceeded the show's original run - racking up more than 2300 performances. Over the course of its three Broadway productions, "Cabaret" has won 12 Tony Awards and three Drama Desk awards.

Based on John Van Druten's 1951 play, "I Am a Camera" and Christopher Isherwood's novel, "Goodbye to Berlin," Kander & Ebb's "Cabaret" focuses on the seedy and indulgent nightlife at the Kit Kat Klub in 1930s Berlin - a spot that serves as a decadent oasis from a country undergoing a dangerous transition. While a young English cabaret performer strikes up a relationship with a young American writer, the world outside the walls of the cabaret starts a slow spiral into madness as the Nazi party begins its imminent rise to power.

Dark, sexually charged, and highly energetic, the musical examines a society's unwillingness to acknowledge dangerous political changes even as they occur in front of its eyes.

Directed and choreographed by Civic's Artistic Director, William Sanders with musical direction by Justin Brehm, "Cabaret" will play Civic's Nineteenth Street Theatre from Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 22.
