BWW Reviews: Voices of the South Offers a Riveting AWAKENING

Poor 'Edna Pontellier' of Kate Chopin's THE AWAKENING - as 'corseted' by society as she is by the habiliments of the day. I'd like to imagine a tea party where she'd feel welcome. Let's see . . . whom to invite? One of Henrik Ibsen's stifled heroines - HEDDA GABLER or 'Nora' from A DOLL'S HOUSE; and there's 'Janie Crawford,' the African-American heroine of Zora Neale Hurston's THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD. What about Gustave Flaubert's MADAME BOVARY? Oh, yes, and let's not neglect the movies: Vivien Leigh's convention-daring 'Scarlett O'Hara,' her foot dancing away while she sports widow's weeds, or a black-wigged Bette Davis gyrating to get out of a small town in King Vidor's hothouse melodrama BEYOND THE FOREST. Now, that would be some group, but they'd all end up smashing the teacups.

Crossroads Theatre Company to Present LETTERS FROM ZORA, Begin. 10/9

Crossroads Theatre Company opens the 2014-15 season with the One Pearl and a Sphinx production of Letters From Zora: In Her Own Words, a one-woman show delving into noted author Zora Neale Hurston's controversial views on segregation, integration and social justice. Written by USC professor Gabrielle Denise Pina with an original score by Ron McCurdy, this daring piece showcases a life filled with artistic triumphs as well as abject poverty and self-doubt. Directed by Anita Dashiell-Sparks, Hurston's personal letters create an authentic multi-sensory dramatization brought to life by veteran actress Vanessa Bell Calloway in a production that will illuminate Hurston's words, life and distinct view of the jazz-age era.

LETTERS FROM ZORA, AUTUMN & More Set for Crossroads Theatre Company's 2014-15 Season

The life and times of Zora Neale Hurston, a family's lingering anguish over the Tulsa riots of 1921, and a political rivalry between friends provide the inspiration for three plays at the dramatic core of Crossroads Theatre Company's 2014-15 'A Family Affair' season featuring the works of emerging and veteran playwrights.
