Jennifer Holliday is undeniably one of R&B and Broadway's greatest voices. Three days ago, Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Yolanda) hit the eastern seaboard of the Philippines and tore across its central islands, bringing wind-speeds close to 200 miles per hour and a storm surge of 20 feet. We are only beginning to understand the scale of destruction, but Haiyan is estimated to have claimed thousands of lives, and the physical and economic damage will be both widespread and long-lasting. The Philippine Red Cross helps provide immediate shelter, food, blankets, hygiene kits and essential non-food supplies to displaced survivors; they estimate that nearly 20,000 families are currently sheltered in over 300 evacuation centers.
