René Magritte, the playful and provocative Belgian Surrealist who set out to create works that would 'challenge the real world' by making 'everyday objects shriek out loud,' is the focus of a major exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago: Magritte, The Mystery of the Ordinary, 1926-1938. The show opens today, June 24, 2014 and runs through October 13, 2014 in Regenstein Hall. A collaborative effort between three museums, the exhibition will make its final stop at the Art Institute following its premiere at The Museum of Modern Art in New York on September 28, 2013 and its current run at the Menil Collection, Houston.
OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network's popular Sunday morning series “Super Soul Sunday,” from Harpo Studios, won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Series at Friday night's (June 20) 41st Annual Daytime Entertainment Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony. This is the second win and third nomination for the series in the three years that it has been on the air.
When Playhouse on the Square first showcased the musical version of the giddy John Waters' romp HAIRSPRAY a few seasons back, terpsichorean dynamo Courtney Oliver (as 'Tracy Turnblad') and theatre veteran Ken Zimmerman ('Miss Edna') left the stage each night with clamorous standing ovations for them and their colorful cohorts. I saw it more than once; it was the kind of theatrical experience that not only made you want to see it repeatedly, but one to which you longed to introduce others. I was thrilled to learn not only that HAIRSPRAY would return to end the current season at Playhouse, but that it would also reunite most of the original cast - and would be directed by the ever reliable Dave Landis.
It's 1962, the '50s are out, and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion - to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, 'The Corny Collins Show' and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Only in Hairspray!
Piedmont Players Theatre (PPT) is proud to announce the line up for its 54th season! The 2014-2015 season will be a little different this year. On Thursday, June 5, her new Sari Schorr Band will be at Stanhope House in Stanhope, New Jersey, where the sensual Schorr will be performing a mix of classic Blues/Rock songs and her own original compositions.
