Highlights of the June calendar include many performances dedicated to the United States's original art form-jazz. Participants of the Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead program-the international jazz residency, performance, and composition project that discovers and presents the next generation of jazz greats on Millennium Stage (June 6-8). Additionally, the Kennedy Center will host eight performances in collaboration with the DC Jazz Festival (June 9-16). Since 2004, the DC Jazz Festival (DCJF) organization has provided enriching and entertaining jazz performances and programs that introduce students and adults from all walks of life to jazz.

I'm going to download the freaking 2008 Royal Albert Hall concert version (with Idina Menzel, Josh Groban and Adam Pascal) to try to keep this column hip. But let's all just remember two things: 1.) Just last night, Nicole Vanessa Ortiz, fresh on the heels of starring in Spamilton and Smokey Joe's Cafe, made her Feinstein's/54 Below solo concert debut in Becoming Her: A Diva's Tribute. Since she was a child, female vocalists have inspired Nicole to use her gifts as an artist on stage. She landed on American Idol as a finalist, won the grand prize on "The Wendy Williams Show" singing competition, and made such an impression singing on BET's Apollo Live that Gladys Knight personally invited her on tour!
When I saw the Baltimore Symphony SuperPops would be featuring vocalist Christina Bianco I had no idea what she would be like. Then I started to hear from people who actually have seen her in concert and raved about her. It became quite clear it would be necessary for me to see this musician for myself.

The renowned New Orleans Jazz Orchestra reflects on the wide-ranging influence of the Big Easy's own Allen Toussaint, the legendary composer, singer, pianist, and producer, with the March 29 digital release of "Songs: The Music of Allen Toussaint" on Storyville Records (physical release is set for April 19). The album features six songs by Toussaint and one associated with him, as well as two original tribute pieces. It also marks the NOJO leadership debut of drummerartistic director Adonis Rose, who assumed the mantle in 2016 to navigate the 18-piece orchestra out of the troubled waters surrounding its now-departed founder.
