Red Branch Theatre Company (RBTC) will kick off its 2016 season entitled Paint It Red with the TONY Award-winning musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Directed by Signature's Director of New Works Joe Calarco (Signature's Gypsy, Shakespeare's R&J) this hilarious new musical is a battle-of-the-sexes set at the 50th Annual Millberry Cake-Off competition. Returning for its fifth year, The Theatre Lab's Dramathon, May 15 at 10:30 p.m. at Theater J, once again joins together the talents of some of the DC area's most well-known actors and accomplished playwrights - along with Theatre Lab students and alumni - in world premiere staged readings of short plays written for that night. All proceeds generated by the event go toward The Theatre Lab's scholarship fund.

With the opening night of the world premiere musical Kid Victory fast approaching at Signature Theatre, the company has unveiled a first behind the scenes look with creators John Kander (Cabaret, Chicago), Greg Pierce (Slowgirl) and Liesl Tommy. Check it out below!

There was a moment today, during our musical rehearsal, when John Kander stood from his seat behind the writers' table. With his first step, the room fell silent. Each subsequent step brought actors further and further towards the edge of their seats as hands of stage managers' discretely turned their phones to camera mode. When he sat down, behind the old, upright rehearsal piano, the focus in the room was unparalleled. His fingers stroked the keys and a brand new version of the verse in question flowed through the chamber of the piano and into the room. No one breathed. Unsure of whether to clap, nod, or cry, we all sat motionless. Jeff Denman, who was sitting next to me, raised his hands in the air and pronounced "John Kander, everybody," and the silence broke in stunned laughter, headshakes, and stifled amen's. It was at that point, sitting around the piano with some of the most talented artists that I've ever had the privilege of meeting, it hit me how surreal this experience was.

This December, Signature Theatre invites you and the family to ring in the holiday season with two limited-run shows.

In Signature's newest cabaret offering, SIGNATURE SISTERS, the incomparable Sherri Edelen, Signature favorite Susan Derry, and the impossibly young and brilliant Florrie Bagel bring the house down. The three have no trouble filling the room, expressing with delicate harmonies the deep heart of female trios from across the ages.

Levine Music's musical theater department, Act Two at Levine, is pleased to announce visiting artists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Cynthia Kortman Westhphal, and an exciting new collaboration with Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre, in addition to a continuing relationship with Arena Stage.

This show marks the first for another new ambitious DC theatre company. With this extremely solid first outing, I can't wait to see what they do next!
