For the second time in two seasons, casting has made me reconsider a Met production that I'd written off as past its expiration date. The first was Diana Damrau and Javier Camarena in Bellini's LA SONNAMBULA. This time around it's the wonderful Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva, who breathed new life into the Willy Decker LA TRAVIATA. She's a marvel, both as an actress and a singer.

Canadian Opera Company Announces Full 2015-2016 Season

Toronto – The world premiere of a new Canadian work was one of the many operatic highlights revealed today at the public launch of the Canadian Opera Company's 2015/2016season at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The COC's 65th season is once again comprised entirely of company productions, four of which are new to Toronto audiences, and features the COC's first mainstage world premiere since 1999, COC premieres of opera rarities and the revival of classic masterpieces.

Opera Star, Janis Martin, Dies at Age 75

Janis Martin, American opera singer who sang leading roles first as a mezzo-soprano and later as a soprano in opera houses throughout Europe and the United States, has died at the age of 75. She was particularly known for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and sang at the Bayreuth Festival from 1968 to 1997.

Quinn Kelsey Set for Metropolitan Opera's LA TRAVIATA

The role of Giorgio Germont in Verdi's La Traviata will be sung by American baritone Quinn Kelsey on January 14 and by Russian baritone Alexei Markov on January 17, 21, and 24, replacing Ludovic Tézier, who is continuing to recover from an illness.

International Opera Star Janis Martin Has Died at 75

American opera singer Janis Martin, best known for stretching her range from a mezzo-soprano to a soprano star, has died. Having suffered from diabetes for years, she passed away at home in San Antonio on Dec. 14, her son Robert confirmed. She was 75.

Update: Issues with Stage Ice at BLADES ON STAGE Have Been Resolved

According to reports on twitter the first performance of Mirvish's holiday show BLADES ON STAGE, now playing at The Princess of Wales Theatre, was canceled due to holes in the ice on stage. These issues have now been resolved, with two successful performances since.

Mirvish Cancels First Performance of BLADES ON STAGE After 30 Mins due to Holes on the Ice

According to reports on twitter the first performance of Mirvish's holiday show BLADES ON STAGE, now playing at The Princess of Wales Theatre, was canceled due to holes in the ice on stage. There are no performances of BLADES ON STAGE scheduled for Thursdays, and there has been no announcement of any further cancelations at the time.

Continuing a tradition inaugurated in 2006, the Met will offer a holiday presentation this December and January: an English-language performance of an opera, with special weekday matinees and discount pricing designed to make the Met affordable for families with children. This year's production, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, opens tonight, December 18.

Stephen Costello Makes Met Role Debut in LA TRAVIATA Tonight

Tucker Award-winning tenor Stephen Costello returns to New York's Metropolitan Opera this Today (Dec 11) to make his house role debut as Alfredo in La traviata, when he gives the first of five performances in Willy Decker's celebrated production. Costello has already sung Verdi's hero in high-profile productions on both sides of the Atlantic. This summer, his performances of the role at San Francisco Opera included a simulcast in the company's Opera in the Ballpark series, which was attended by an audience of more than 25,000 people.

This year's production, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, opens December 18 and will star Aleksandra Kurzak, Heidi Stober, and Andriana Chuchman as Gretel; Christine Rice and Jennifer Johnson Cano as Hansel; Michaela Martens and Dwayne Croft as Gertrude and Peter, the wayward children's parents; and Robert Brubaker as the wicked Witch who captures them. Sir Andrew Davis will conduct all seven performances of the opera, which plays through January 8. There will be special weekday matinees at 11 a.m. on December 23 and December 30.

American baritone Quinn Kelsey will sing the role of Giorgio Germont in Verdi's La Traviata on December 22, 27 matinee, 30, January 7 and 10, replacing Ludovic Tézier, who is continuing to recover from an illness. Tézier is expected to return to the role January 14 for the opera's final four performances this season.
