Like the billboard on the Sunset Strip says, Highly Suspect is the best f**kin' rock band of 2015....and 2016 too, for that matter. The 300 Entertainment recording act is one of the music industry's most exciting artist development stories. 2015 saw them release their critically praised debut album Mister Asylum and also launch their debut single, “Lydia”. Not content to rest after touring non-stop since their album's release, the band is currently in Bogata, Columbia recording their eagerly anticipated follow-up to their debut album with producer Joel Hamilton. They'll hit the road immediately after wrapping up recording with dates announced today.
When New York cabaret community insiders and frequent club goers heard that Marissa Mulder was planning a Marilyn Monroe-themed show, the consensus was the vocalist's naturally breathy voice paired with a roster of songs from Monroe's films would be a good fit. Sidestepping expectations, Mulder and Director Sondra Lee have instead put together a one-woman theater piece with almost as much monologue (using Monroe's own words) as music. Equally surprising, the impressionistic show (currently in the midst of a four-show run at the Laurie Beechman Theatre after launching in February at the Metropolitan Room) features not Monroe's familiar material, but rather songs that reflect what its creators intuit as her internal life.
Following their acclaimed, sell-out performances recreating The Band's The Last Waltz concert at the Belgrade in 2011, the Mustard and Blood band return to the B2 auditorium in 2016 with three very special live shows this June.
“If Tom Waits and Billie Holiday were to have a style child, singer-songwriter Sophie Auster would be it,” writes Vogue, describing the unique blend of power and glamour that Auster commands. The Deli likens her music to “a cross between Fiona Apple's righteous rage andGillian Welch's homespun folk yarns…” While Auster cites these artists as influences for her songwriting, her music is wholly her own. Her latest album, Dogs and Men (Out Loud Music), has been called “soaring” (W Magazine). The New York Times praises the album's “songs that meld sultry, folksy vocals with soul- (and teeth-) baring lyrics” and recently premiered the video for the album's first single, “Bad Manners.” Her NYC tour itinerary can be found below.
