When one of the world's major opera houses announced its plans to present the best-known works of Broadway's Rodgers and Hammerstein over a five-season span, no one had reason to believe that the Lyric Opera of Chicago would present a 'Carousel' starring a slew of Broadway, television, opera and ballet stars alongside the cream of Chicago's theatrical and vocal talent (60 actors, singers and dancers in all), supported by an orchestra of 37 players, and all overseen by the same director and musical director who would bring 'The Sound of Music' and 'Peter Pan' to live television, Carrie Underwood, Christopher Walken and all.
Carousel is the third Rodgers and Hammerstein musical to be presented as part of Lyric's American Musical Theater Initiative. The King and I and South Pacific follow in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, respectively. Past productions were Oklahoma! in the 2012-13 season and The Sound of Music in the 2013-14 season. Carousel runs Friday, April 10 through Sunday, May 3, 2015 (26 performances, including one preview and one student matinee) at the Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Dr., Chicago. Tickets start at $29, and are available at lyricopera.org/carousel or at 312-827-5600. The official press opening for Carousel is Saturday, April 11 at 7pm.

Greed and familial betrayal is at the darkly comic heart of The Little Foxes by Tony Award-winning playwright Lillian Hellman-'an expertly constructed, grippingly paced plot machine that pits good against evil and lets evil win' (The New York Times). Artistic Associate Henry Wishcamper directs the classic 1939 play about wealth's corrupting power-one of Hellman's most notable works, which was adapted into a 1941 film starring Bette Davis-centering on the Hubbard family's ruthless pursuit in the South's post-bellum economic slump. The Little Foxes appears May 2 - June 7 in the Albert Theatre (opening night is Monday, May 11). Tickets ($25-$81; subject to change) are on sale now at GoodmanTheatre.org/LittleFoxes, by phone at 312.443.3800 or at the box office (170 North Dearborn). The Goodman Theatre Women's Board is the Major Production Sponsor, Ernst & Young LLP and Interactive Health are the Corporate Sponsor Partners and Towers Watson is the Opening Night Sponsor for The Little Foxes.
