BWW Reviews: MACK & MABEL, Southwark Playhouse, July 11 2012

Sometimes when directors revive old plays you wonder why they've done it. Mack & Mabel, currently playing at Southwark Playhouse, is not a classic crying out to be brought back to life, though being about the early days of cinema it is rather on trend.

Southwark Playhouse presents a major revival of the Jerry Herman/Michael Stewart Hollywood musical, Mack and Mabel, starring Norman Bowman as Mack and Laura Pitt-Pulford (who received rave reviews as Lucille Frank in Parade) as Mabel, directed by Thom Southerland and produced by Danielle Tarento. The show will run for an 8-week season at The Vault at Southwark Playhouse, now through Saturday, August 25. Press night is tomorrow, July 11 at 7.30pm. The creative team behind last summer's sold-out, acclaimed Southwark Playhouse musical, Parade - long-listed for The Ned Sherrin Award for Best Musical in the 2011 Evening Standard Awards - are returning to the venue for a major revival of the Jerry Herman/Michael Stewart Hollywood musical, Mack and Mabel. The show runs tonight, July 5 - August 25.

Whatsonstage.com is reporting that Thom Southerland will helm a new production of Terrence McNally and David Yazbeck's The Full Monty. The production will make its debut at the Broadway Theatre in Catford from running November 4-29, with a West End transfer to the Players Theatre scheduled for. December 2. The production will run at the Players Theatre through January 2. This production will be the first revival of the show in the West End since 2002, where it played at the Prince of Wales Theatre for only eight months.
