New York Phil to Stream First-Ever Live Concert on Facebook for Season Opener, 9/21

The New York Philharmonic will present its first-ever live concert broadcast on Facebook with the 2016-17 season Opening Gala Concert, Wednesday, September 21, 2016, launching its 175th anniversary season and The New World Initiative, a season-long, citywide project revolving around Dvo?ak's Symphony No. 9, From the New World, and its theme of "home." Throughout the 2016-17 season, The New World Initiative will explore the New World Symphony through performances, community outreach, and education projects on the occasion of the Philharmonic's 175th anniversary season, honoring the Orchestra's hometown and its role as an adopted home for many.

Wallach Artist-in-Residence Eric Owens, who has withdrawn due to illness, on advisement from his doctor, in selections from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn, led by John Storga?rds in his Philharmonic debut, Today, May 12, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, May 13 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, May 14 at 8:00 p.m.

NY Philharmonic & Harmony Program Partnering with Second All Stars Initiative

The New York Philharmonic and Harmony Program, a non-profit organization that provides free instruments and daily classical music instruction to children in economically challenged communities across New York City, will collaborate again in the annual Harmony Program All Stars Ensemble. Nine All Stars - New York City middle- and high-school students from low- income neighborhoods - have been selected by audition for a month-long mentorship with New York Philharmonic musicians. The All Stars will attend a Philharmonic concert, experience an intensive day of coaching and rehearsal with Philharmonic musicians, and perform with their Philharmonic mentors during a free public concert in the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. The concert will feature the World Premiere of Lucy's Aria, a string quartet by American composer John Corigliano, which will be premiered as part of a partnership between classical music publisher G. Schirmer and the Harmony Program.

The 2015-16 season's New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts (YPCs) will conclude on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. with 'Story and Song,' the final program in this season's series, Once Upon a Time, which explores music inspired by stories, poems, and legends. The concert will include selections from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn and selections from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, performed by The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Eric Owens; Rossini's William Tell Overture; a selection from Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Resurrection; and a selection from Copland's Appalachian Spring. Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Courtney Lewis will lead the performance; Vice President, Education, Theodore Wiprud will host.

The 93rd season of the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts (YPCs) will continue on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. with "Babble and Verse," the third program in this season's series, Once Upon a Time, which explores music inspired by stories, poems, and legends. The concert will feature selections from The Marie-Jose?e Kravis Composer-in- Residence Esa-Pekka Salonen's Karawane, Orff's Carmina burana, and Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, as well as Rachmaninoff's Vocalise. Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Courtney Lewis will lead the performance; Vice President, Education, Theodore Wiprud will host the event, which will be directed and scripted by Tom Dulack.

The 93rd season of the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts (YPCs) will continue on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. with the program 'Myths and Legends,' the second in this season's series, Once Upon a Time, which explores music inspired by stories, poems, and legends. The concert will feature Sibelius's Lemminka?inen's Return, Finlandia, and selections from En saga, as well as works by Very Young Composers of Finland and New York City. Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Joshua Gersen will lead the performance; Vice President, Education, Theodore Wiprud will host the event, which will be directed and scripted by Tom Dulack. The performance will feature actor Tuomas Hiltunen reciting selections from the Finnish epic poem Kalevala - the basis for many of Sibelius's works, including Lemminka?inen's Return - with runic singing.

The 93rd season of the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts (YPCs) will begin on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. with the program "Fables and Folktales," the first in this season's series, Once Upon a Time, exploring music inspired by stories, poems, and legends. The season's first concert will feature Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, narrated by Brandon Gill; Richard Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks; and the first performance of selections from the orchestral version of Raphael Mostel's Travels of Babar, Part One: The Honeymoon, accompanied by a digital slideshow of high-resolution scans of Babar author Jean de Brunhoff's watercolors. Joshua Gersen, in his first season as a Philharmonic Assistant Conductor, will make his Philharmonic debut leading the performance, and Vice President, Education, Theodore Wiprud will host the event.

The New York Philharmonic and Harmony Program announce the launch of the inaugural Harmony All Stars Ensemble - nine New York City middle- and high-school students from low-income neighborhoods selected by audition for an eleven-day mentorship with New York Philharmonic musicians. Music Director Alan Gilbert will conduct the season's final New York Philharmonic Young People's Concert (YPC), Saturday, May 9, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. with the program "Dance Transformed," the fourth in this season's series, SUPER SONIC MUSIC BOX, exploring the variety of symphonic music and its interpretation. The concert traces the evolution of the waltz through a variety of works: J. Strauss II's On the Beautiful Blue Danube, selections from Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales, Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez's Batuque from Reisado do pastoreio, Mambo from Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and selections from R. Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier Suite. Vice President, Education, Theodore Wiprud will host the event, which will be directed and scripted by Tom Dulack and feature dancer Heather Lipson Bell.
