The life of Mary Rodgers Guettel, composer and children's book author, will be remembered and honored in a memorial celebration on Monday, November 3 at Town Hall. Mary was best known for her musical Once Upon a Mattress, and her novel Freaky Friday. She passed away in June at her home in New York City. She was 83 years old.

BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, the longest operating performance venue in lower Manhattan, presents Peter Cincotti, performing tonight, October 25 at 8PM, the first of four major concerts in the 2014-2015 Main Event Series, which also includes the Spanish Harlem Orchestra (November 21 at 8PM, $45 - $35) and The Hit Men (December 13 at 8PM, $45 - $35). You'd think a play called Psycho Beach Party would be a little more, well....crazy. But Charles Busch's affectionate parody of 1960s beach movies seldom seems more unhinged than the cheerful teen romps it draws inspiration from. Oh, it's not all sun and fun in the sand, to be sure. There's a fair amount of sexual kink, a domineering mother who could give Margaret White a run for her money, and revelations of a tragic past, but it all feels so light. The poster for the Theatreworks production, featuring a knife-wielding beach bunny, promises a gruesome good time that the play never really delivers.

The Pasadena Playhouse announced that they will present Matthew Lopez's multi-award winning play THE WHIPPING MAN, which will replace the previously announced production of William Gibson's TWO FOR THE SEESAW as the fourth production of the 2014-2015 season. THE WHIPPING MAN is produced in association with South Coast Repertory, where the show will play January 4-25, 2015, and then transfer to The Pasadena Playhouse February 3 - March 1, 2015 with a press opening on February 4.

The Old Globe today announced the cast and creative team for the Old Globe/University of San Diego Graduate Theatre Program presentation of William Shakespeare's Pericles, Prince of Tyre, directed by Ray Chambers and running November 15 - November 23 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. One of my son's favorite children's book series is "Fly Guy" by Tedd Arnold. So when we heard that Theatreworks, one of New York's preeminent family theatre companies, was presenting a musical version of "Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl", we knew we had to check it out! Our favorite, buzzing hero's tale was part of a new musical revue based on favorite children's books. The show kicked off a new weekend performance series at the Danny Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, and if "Fly Guy" was any indication, the rest of the series is sure to be a hit.
