Fifty years after Motown revolutionized the music industry with its 'Sound of Young America' and countless 1964 Billboard hits by Mary Wells, The Supremes and others, the smash Broadway hit MOTOWN THE MUSICAL is proud to sponsor CBS News Live Experiences launch of 50 YEARS: THE BEATLES, a live, interactive multimedia event marking the 50th anniversary of the band's first American television appearance on CBS's 'The Ed Sullivan Show.'

Bridgeport Theatre Company, soon to celebrate four years since it was founded, is presenting Dreamgirls, the big, bold, groundbreaking musical. The Henry Krieger-Tom Eyen show premiered in 1981 and is loosely based on Diana Ross and The Supremes and other singers who helped make Motown a huge crossover success. More than 30 years later, it is still a terrific show, but a little cutting would make it easier for today's audiences to digest.

Today in 1981, Dreamgirls opened at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 1521 performances. Based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others, the musical follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called 'The Dreams', who become music superstars. It was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, and won six. It was later adapted into a motion picture from DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures in 2006.
